Gualala
The town of Gualala sits just north of the Sea Ranch, and will be the most convenient spot for food, gas, and other essentials during your stay.
Gas
There are a 76 and a Chevron in town, about a 5-minute drive from the house.
Groceries
There are two grocery stores in Gualala:
- Surf Market: Smaller, a bit more targeted, higher prices. Think smaller Whole Foods. Also has good made-to-order sandwiches
- Gualala Supermarket: a larger grocery store with more variety and generally lower prices. Think a smaller Safeway. Send grandpa shopping there on Mondays and Wednesdays, when they have a 10% discount!
Restaurants and Such
- Trinks is our favorite local spot. They make great pastries and coffee, and also have some delicious breakfast and lunch options. They also have several fridges and display areas for takeaway foods, sauces, and drinks
- Upper Crust Pizzeria is a good local pizza spot. Be sure to call ahead, as prep times can be long
- Twofish Baking (twofishbaking.com) is the best bakery around, which isn’t just a reflection of a low number of local bakeries. They make fantastic bread and pastries, and also make great sandwiches and calzones. The attached store also has some high-quality food and drinks
- The Black Door has very good, very large burritos
- The Sea Ranch Lodge (thesearanchlodge.com) is a gorgeous building at the south end of the Sea Ranch, and has both a cafe and more formal dining options, in addition to a bar and lounge seating
- Timber Cove (timbercoveresort.com) is a resort with a bar and restaurant. It’s a few miles south, but has a stunning blufftop setting that is worth the drive
- There are several other food options in Gualala, but, well, we haven’t tried them yet, so happy hunting
Canoeing and Kayaking
Adventure Rents (adventurerents.com) is just on the other side of the Gualala River, and offers canoes and kayaks for rental. They also provide guided excursions.
Farmers Market
The Gualala Farmers Market (https://gualalafarmersmarket.org/) runs on Saturdays from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM, from late May through early November.
Wine
There are several fun, small vineyards in the coastal hills near the Sea Ranch. A few are listed below:
- Annapolis Winery
- Hirsch Winery
- Wild Hog Vineyard
- Fort Ross Vineyard
If you want to go a bit further afield, the house is about an hour and a half away from both Anderson Valley, and from the wineries in northern Sonoma County. In all cases, please remember that there are a lot of winding roads involved, so please plan accordingly in terms of designating a driver.
